Fanfic and Dead Gnomes

Kaja Foglio Eyeroller
On Monday, for good or ill, we signed off on the second Girl Genius novel. Yesterday, I fell down the rabbit hole that is fanfiction.net, and have only just emerged, grinning like a mad thing. No, I'm not reading Girl Genius fanfic, more's the pity...I'm not allowed to because of legal concerns. When we're done with the GG story, I intend to have myself a good, long read. (That is, assuming the internet is still around at that point.} I was actually off reading what Phil likes to call "corrective fanfic" for various manga/anime series I like. After a day of this delightful but overly-rich indulgence, I feel a bit like I've eaten an entire box of bonbons all at one sitting.

I'm not proud, but I am happy.

Here is a picture I took in our garden, on a snowy night a  couple of weeks ago:
deadgnome Yeek! Zombie gnome!

Okay, actually, I hid our old garden gnome and replaced it with this skeletal gnome. It took two days for Phil and the kids to notice, but when they did, it was SO worth it: "What happened to our gnome?!"
"Huh. I guess he died."
"What? No, really, what happened?"
"Well, did YOU remember to feed him?"
"Moooooom!"

My children are really fun to mess with.

Probably for the best that you don't approach your own section of ff.net. There would be much flailing of fandom.

I for one would have to pull my stories or risk self-immolation from embarrassment.

STILL LOLing at the garden gnome...and wanting to know 1. Where does one acquire a skeleton gnome and 2. OMG KAJA WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO THE TRAVELOCITY GNOME?

And since fanfic is mentioned, is this some kind of nightmarish Amelie/Night of the Living Dead crossover?

Even worse, if she liked it. Just imagine the pressure of getting a review asking for an update from Kaja.

Bad enough I FINALLY get my novel on Kindle and less than a day later get "Great! When's the sequel?" This is karmic payback for every author/creator I've ever asked "When's the next one out?" At least with fan fic I can go la la I'm not getting paid there's no rush...

Oh dear. Evil and hilarious, and soooo much better than my approach of just blowing the garden gnomes up. :-)))

Your patience in waiting two days for them to notice is impressive.

So filing the gnome trick away for future use. Muahahahaha...
And oh man the rabbit hole of fanfiction.net. Corrective fanfic indeed. :)

Ah, yes, the realm of corrective fanfic. It's exactly as you describe it.

You are an awesome mom. :D Skeletal lawn gnome. *snerk*

I would have told them "piranhas", but then again it's probably just as well I don't have kids, isn't it...

Two novels down; eagerly awaiting more
Next year, I have an evil (?) plan to introduce my students (I teach 7th and 8th grade English/Reading classes in public school) to the various speculative fiction genres. Naturally, this includes the many faces of steampunk. I have two Agatha H novels; I eagerly await the rest, purely for professional reasons, of course. I ALSO await, for my own part and still quite faithfully, a Girl Genius GURPS book. However, should balance in the universe need maintaining, I will settle for the prose Agatha H novels. The future of education depends on it!
